Being a C17-alpha alkylated compound, Anavar can be hepatotoxic. However, possible negative effects on the liver vary depending on the dosage, cycle length, and individual response to this anabolic steroid.

Anavar has a low androgenic-to-anabolic ratio, so it doesn’t cause virilization effects in women (as long as the recommended dosage isn’t exceeded). 

Anavar’s detection time can differ, depending on how long you have used the compound, in what dosage, and what your metabolism rate is (it slows down with age). In general, it takes around 30-45 days for Oxandrolone to clear out of your system completely.

Remember, Anavar can be detected in lab tests, so competitive athletes should be careful with the compound.

Anavar effects in bodybuilding

Anavar is a popular choice for lean bulking or cutting cycles, but athletes rarely use it for muscle mass-focused cycles. Even though it doesn’t cause excessive fluid retention, it is not as effective as Test, Deca, or Dbol for gaining sheer muscle.

Here are some of the Anavar’s effects on your body:

• Increased lean muscle mass: Anavar can promote protein synthesis and aid in gaining muscle mass without water retention (+ approx. 10 lbs). If you’re on a calorie deficit, you can add a few pounds or preserve lean muscle mass as well;
• Reduced body fat content: this compound is great for cutting cycles. It increases muscle hardness and definition and improves the muscles-to-fat ratio dramatically;
• Improved strength stats: you can feel increased strength from the second week of the cycle, almost guaranteed;

Are Anavar gains permanent?

When you’re on a steroid cycle, most of the time you can expect to lose some of the muscle mass that you have gained. Usually, one can lose a few pounds as the water, nitrogen, and glycogen retention subside.

Anavar is a “dry” compound, meaning it doesn’t cause water retention (bloating). Unlike “wet” compounds, Anavar gains are more permanent, meaning you’ll keep most of them. 

However, Oxandrolone still can cause glycogen retention, so your muscles may not look as full as they did on the cycle.

Can I use Anavar for bulking cycles?

Oxandrolone has a low androgenic-to-anabolic ratio, and it’s a DHT derivative. You can’t really use it as the main compound for a bulking cycle. Maybe if you’re a complete beginner, but definitely not if you’ve cycled more powerful bulking gear before.

You won’t dramatically increase your muscle mass on a Var cycle. If you use it while eating in a calorie surplus, you won’t achieve a leaner, drier look as well. It will be just a waste of your money and time, unnecessary liver damage, and fewer gains. Use classic injectable bulking compounds if you’re looking for pure muscle mass gains, like Tren or Dbol.

You can add Var as a final touch after the cycle with wet bulking agents to increase vascularity and muscle definition, or stack it with Test for a lean bulking cycle.

Anavar side effects

Most bodybuilders report the following side effects:

• Testosterone suppression;
• Decreased HDL levels;
• Increased LDL levels;
• Headaches;
• Nausea;
• Elevation of the liver enzyme levels;
• Fatigue;
• Dehydration symptoms.

Keep in mind, not following the recommended dosage or cycle length can lead to serious health problems: decreased liver function (in extreme cases ― liver failure), increased risk of atherosclerosis, cardiovascular disorders, and virilization (in women). 

Can Anavar cause back pumps?

There are anecdotal reports of back pumps and cramps on an Anavar cycle. You can add Taurine to avoid back pain: 5 mg/day is just enough. Some athletes say that Magnesium and electrolyte supplementation have helped as well.

However, if the pain is severe, you should go to a medical professional to rule out any possible sports injuries.

Can Anavar affect blood pressure?

Anavar is not as likely to increase blood pressure as Test or Dbol (aromatizable compounds), but it still has some androgenic activity, so it can cause BP spikes. 

BP spikes don’t mean that your Var is fake. 

Blood pressure can be affected through various mechanisms, including enhanced blood flow, impact on the RAAS system, and others. If you do not have any pre-existing cardiovascular medical conditions and do not stack Anavar with other compounds, your blood pressure will stabilize quickly.

Anavar administration guidelines

Anavar solo cycles aren’t that common. When used alone, Anavar can aid in weight loss, providing cosmetic effects (muscle hardness, pumps, etc.) and preserving muscle mass on a calorie-restricted diet:

It’s best not to use Anavar for longer than 6 weeks for men, 5 weeks for women. Prolonging the cycle length can increase liver hepatotoxicity, so always check your liver enzyme levels before going for it (ALT, AST, Bilirubin). 

If you run Anavar for the first time, start with the lowest dosage to evaluate your reaction to the compound and give your body time to get used to the steroid. You can increase the dosage gradually after a week or two if everything’s okay.

Due to the short half-life of the compound (12 hours max), it’s recommended to split the daily dose in 2 halves. This way, your serum concentration will be more stable.

Anavar PCT recommendations

Even though Anavar has a low androgenic activity index, it can cause HPTA suppression. To restore normal testosterone production and avoid symptoms of low test levels, you’ll need to use Nolvadex for 3-4 weeks after the end of the cycle.

Anavar has a short half-life; therefore, PCT can be started 2-3 days after the end of the cycle:

• Nolvadex: 40 mg/day for the first two weeks, then 20 mg/day for the last two weeks;
• In case you use Clomiphene instead: 50 mg/day for the first two weeks, then 25 mg/day for the last two.

You don’t need to add an aromatase inhibitor during the cycle, as Anavar isn’t converted to estrogen. If you stack Anavar with aromatizable compounds, Arimidex is a must, though.
